Common Home Maintenance Tasks
Many tasks for home maintenance should be done regularly, such as cleaning the gutters twice a year or cleaning the screens in the windows before spring. Many home maintenance tasks are simple enough for the everyday person to do. Check out these easy DIY home maintenance tasks.
Clean the HVAC Filter
Over time your HVAC system will draw in dust and other particles from the air, which collect in your system’s filter. This build-up forces your system to work harder to move air through your home, leading to higher energy costs. Replacing the filter at least every other month will keep your HVAC system running smoothly. If you have pets, changing your filters monthly may be a good idea.
Test Smoke Alarms
It’s imperative to keep your smoke alarms in good working order throughout the year for obvious reasons. The conventional wisdom says to replace your smoke detector batteries when you change your clocks in spring and fall and test them once a month. Doing so will make sure that your smoke detectors will work whenever they’re needed.
Inspect Electrical Cords
Electrical cords are often overlooked in home maintenance, but damaged cords are dangerous. They can seriously injure people or pets and are a serious fire hazard. Check your electrical cords for signs of wear or exposed wiring once a month. Any cables showing signs of damage should be repaired or replaced immediately.
Clean Drains
Clean your drains monthly to avoid major plumbing issues. Grab gloves and reach into the drain to remove hair or debris from the drain trap. You can also use a plumbing snake or straighten a wire coat hanger to get deeper into the drain. If you can’t remove everything by hand, pick up some drain cleaner from your local hardware store and use that to clear stubborn debris.
Cleaning the Garbage Disposal
Failing to clean the garbage disposal regularly can lead to plumbing problems and foul odors in your kitchen. Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to clean them. You only need some lemon peels, ice cubes, and a little baking soda. Toss all three in your disposal and let it run for a minute or so. The ice will help break up any food particles stuck to the blades. Lemon and baking soda will sanitize the disposal and help with unpleasant smells.
DIY home maintenance doesn’t have to be a big ordeal. A few small monthly tasks can help your home look good and feel clean.
